Nice work. The selector is cleanly contained: the orchestrator never leaks into global routing (stripped before writeModelConfig), Set all agents can't touch it, and reopens keep the choice, including key absence. Locally on the PR head: the affected suite is 198/198 and pnpm run typecheck reports 0 diagnostics.
One behavior I'd like a maintainer call on before merge, because it's the residual gap #1478 targets. The row's initial value is always the live session (S7, preserving #1522), never what the target profile already stores. So pressing u to tweak an agent replaces the profile's orchestrator with the live model unless the user re-picks it first. I probed it on the PR head with the existing profilesStoreFixture, live model openai/alpha + low, pressing u without touching the row:
Target profile before u |
Profile after u |
|---|---|
no orchestrator key (leave untouched) |
openai/alpha + low |
openai/beta + high |
openai/alpha + low |
This isn't a regression (main's u captured the live model too), and the value is visible in the row. But S4's "leave untouched" only persists if the user re-selects it on every u, and a later apply of that profile switches the live orchestrator. That is the surprise the issue describes.
Suggestion: seed the row from the target profile's stored entry, or its absence, when the profile exists, and fall back to the live session only when there is no target profile or store. If #1522's live default should win, a follow-up is fine, but I'd make that an explicit decision.
Non-blocking: /gentle:profiles s parity is out of scope as stated, and I agree it belongs in its own follow-up.

@danielgap thanks for the concrete reproduction. I took the profile-first recommendation in e8ec70e. The row now starts from the pinned-or-active target profile's saved orchestrator entry or its actual absence. Editing an agent and pressing This is an intentional adjustment to #1522's unconditional live-first default, now documented in the PR and reference. Both regression cases were RED before the correction and GREEN afterwards. The existing no-target/live and missing-store/settings checks also pass; the latter now checks the rendered initial row as well as the saved profile. The four-file affected suite passed 207/207 independently in a fresh committed scratch copy and 207/207 in the parent spot check. Typecheck reported 0 diagnostics and runtime integrity matched all 15 generated modules. The known non-Git fixture stderr diagnostic remains visible despite exit 0. CI update: all eight Actions checks and CodeRabbit passed for exact published head |

Remove the orchestrator key from restored before the restore writes models.json.
The new code protects only the panel draft from the export's orchestrator key. The write before it (writeModelConfigAsync(ctx.cwd, restored) at Line 3728) persists restored unchanged. An export from a version that still stored orchestrator in models.json therefore writes that key back into global routing.
This conflicts with the change at Lines 3799-3813, which keeps the orchestrator out of models.json. readEffectiveModelConfig then returns the stale entry. /gentle:profiles bootstrap uses that value, and so do s snapshots when no live model or settings entry overwrites it. In both cases a stale orchestrator can be copied into a profile.
Remove the key once before the write. The write, applyModelConfigAsync, and the draft then all use the same agent-only routing.

Closes #1478
PR Type
Summary
/gentle:models, including leave untouched.usnapshots the chosen pair or actual key absence; saving does not switch the live model/effort or write orchestrator defaults.Scope and compatibility
The row starts from the pinned-or-active target profile's stored orchestrator entry, or leave untouched when that profile has no key. Only without an existing target profile does it use the live session model/effort, then settings when no live model exists. This intentionally adjusts #1522's unconditional live-first initial value: editing only an agent and pressing
umust not replace a profile's orchestrator with the live model. A later explicit selection still wins. The save contract keepsctrl+sagent/global-only anduprofile-specific. Optional explicit-selector parity for/gentle:profilessremains out of scope; its current live-first/settings-fallback snapshot, Enter/session binding, and explicit globalabehavior are unchanged.Changes
